[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Samsung Electronics announced on the 21st that it has carried out executive personnel appointments for 2020 and promoted a total of 162 people.
The number of executives promoted is fewer than the 221 at the end of 2017 but increased compared to 158 at the end of 2018. By rank, there are 14 Vice Presidents, 42 Senior Vice Presidents, 88 General Managers, 3 Fellows, and 15 Masters.
Samsung Electronics explained, “We promoted young leaders who possess both management performance and growth potential to Vice President, strengthening the pool of future CEO candidates,” and added, “We appointed 3 Fellows and 15 Masters, the top experts in the R&D division representing the company's technological capabilities, to reinforce the status of a leading technology company.”
Among those promoted to Vice President are Choi Yong-hoon, Head of the LED Development Group in the Visual Display Business Division, who led the development of next-generation TV form factors such as Cinema LED and The Wall; Choi Won-jun, Head of Strategic Product Development Team 1 in the Wireless Business Division, who contributed to the world's first commercialization of 5G terminals and the launch of Galaxy S10 and Note10; and Kim Woo-jun, Head of the North America BM Group in the Network Business Division, who contributed to new business entry in the U.S. and the discovery of 5G commercialization service models, totaling 14 people promoted to Vice President.
Samsung Electronics selected and promoted 24 talented individuals regardless of age or years of service. Among them, 13 were promoted to Senior Vice President or higher. Dave Das, Senior Vice President and Head of the HE Division at the U.S. subsidiary under North America Headquarters, was included in this promotion list for expanding sales of QLED, large-size, and Lifestyle TVs in the U.S., thereby strengthening sales growth and market dominance in the U.S.
Moon Jun, Senior Vice President and Head of the System Design Group in the Network Business Division, is a base station wireless communication technology expert who led the world's first commercialization launch of 5G, contributing to the competitiveness of the network business and enhancing the company's technological status.
Samsung Electronics boldly expanded selective promotions for talented individuals with performance and capabilities regardless of age or years of service, following the principle of meritocracy. In terms of strengthening diversity, the company also maintained an open promotion policy for foreigners and female employees.
The number of selective promotions at Samsung Electronics has been increasing annually, from 8 in May 2017 to 13 at the end of 2017, and 18 at the end of 2018. Samsung Electronics has completed the executive personnel appointments for 2020 through this regular executive personnel announcement and plans to finalize organizational restructuring and position appointments soon.
