[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Seul-gi] A man in his 40s accused of strangling his coworker, with whom he was in an extramarital relationship, to death has been sentenced to a heavy prison term.
The 12th Criminal Division of the Gwangju District Court (Chief Judge Jeong Jae-hee) announced that A (42), who was indicted on charges including murder, was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
A was charged with visiting an apartment in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, where his coworker B, with whom he had an extramarital relationship, lived while intoxicated last August, assaulting B who told him to "stop coming," and strangling B to death.
The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "The victim likely experienced extreme fear until death. The bereaved family also suffered mental shock and pain and still petition for severe punishment against the defendant. However, considering that the defendant appears to have committed the crime impulsively and is showing remorse."
Regarding the prosecution's request for an electronic monitoring order, the court rejected it, stating, "Considering the defendant's criminal tendencies and circumstances, the risk of reoffending against unspecified persons seems low."
