[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Junho] Korea's first experiential virtual exhibition hall applying three-dimensional (3D) space remodeling technology has opened in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 17th that the National Gwacheon Science Museum will open a cyber exhibition hall where visitors can view exhibits in three dimensions on the 21st.
The core technology of the virtual exhibition hall, 3D space remodeling, is a new technology that virtualizes real spaces by having a robot equipped with a dedicated 3D scanner rapidly scan indoor spaces, after which artificial intelligence (AI) automatically generates a three-dimensional map.
The Gwacheon Science Museum applied 3D space remodeling over seven months in collaboration with T-Labs Co., Ltd. and SP Technology Co., Ltd. to the Korean Science Civilization Hall (93 exhibits, 2440㎡), which features many experiential and explanatory elements.
Visitors can move freely throughout the entire exhibition hall in cyberspace. They can also enjoy character guides (7 types), virtual reality (VR) three-dimensional exhibits (14 items), and video content (11 items). The Gwacheon Science Museum plans to apply 3D space remodeling to other exhibition halls in the future.
Kim Hyun-soo, Head of Customer Service at the National Gwacheon Science Museum, stated, "Through the immersive 3D virtual reality (VR) cyber exhibition hall, we have created a space for scientific experiences accessible via PC and mobile devices to stimulate children's curiosity and provide a preview effect of the exhibition hall to residents in remote areas who find it difficult to visit the museum, thereby addressing regional inequalities."
