[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] Korea Polytechnic University Anseong Campus is changing its name to 'Semiconductor Convergence Campus' and launching as the nation's only semiconductor-specialized university.
This move is to cultivate specialized personnel needed by the market and companies, following the 'System Semiconductor Vision and Strategy' jointly announced by related ministries last May.
On the 15th, Lee Seok-haeng, Chairman of Polytechnic, held the launch ceremony of the Semiconductor Convergence Campus and said, "Even before Japan's export regulation measures, we recognized the importance of localization of semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment, as well as workforce development, and have been preparing the Semiconductor Convergence Campus with the industry. We will continue to proactively respond to industrial changes."
The Semiconductor Convergence Campus is located in Gyeonggi-do, the largest semiconductor company cluster area in the country. It is also close to Samsung Semiconductor Pyeongtaek Campus and SK Hynix's Yongin Semiconductor Cooperation District (Cluster), raising expectations for synergistic effects between industry and academia.
Polytechnic plans to operate the Semiconductor Convergence Campus together with campuses that already have semiconductor departments as a 'Semiconductor Cooperation District (Cluster)'.
The Semiconductor Convergence Campus will serve as the core, while Seongnam, Asan, and Cheongju campuses will be specialized respectively in material analysis, post-processing, and equipment maintenance, aiming to cultivate 6,190 semiconductor specialists by 2025.
Polytechnic and the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association have completed the reorganization of six departments, including curriculum development and equipment introduction, to ensure that industry demands are reflected in the training courses.
Additionally, to enhance the practical aspect of education and training, a 'Learning Factory' where semiconductor manufacturing processes can be practiced will be operated. A cleanroom environment similar to actual semiconductor production plants is being created, and equipment installation is expected to be completed by the end of next month.
Thereafter, students will gain hands-on experience by fabricating metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitors, the basic structure of semiconductor integrated circuits, at the Learning Factory.
Nam Gi-man, Vice Chairman of the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association, stated, "We will actively support the Semiconductor Convergence Campus to become a successful model that cultivates talented individuals with excellent skills, provides good jobs for youth, and contributes to industrial development."
