The Life and Literature of Albert Camus as Viewed by Choi Soo-cheol, Winner of the Dongin Literary Award

[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] Choi Su-cheol, who won the Dongin Literary Award last year for "The Flower of Poison," will give lectures on the life and works of Albert Camus at Space Raon in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, on the 15th and 22nd of this month.

The event is held ahead of the publication of the "Camus" volume in the classic humanities travel series "Classic Cloud" by Book21 Arte Publishing.

Classic Cloud is a humanities travel series launched in 2018 by Arte Publishing with the concept of "100 representative writers of our time embark on a journey to find the masters of my life." It revisits the lives of masters and their classic works, compiling the author's travelogue tracing the footsteps of these masters into one volume. Through Classic Cloud, readers can interpret classics from a contemporary perspective and gain new insights.

Since April 2018, starting with literary critic Hwang Kwang-soo's "Shakespeare," fifteen volumes have been published so far, including columnist Jeon Won-kyung's "Klimt" and writer Baek Min-seok's "Hemingway."

Choi Su-cheol's "Camus" is scheduled to be published on the 20th. Starting with Camus, twelve new volumes of the Classic Cloud series will be published this year, including "Charles Darwin" by Lee Jung-mo, director of the Seoul Science Museum, and "Beethoven" by music columnist Choi Eun-gyu.

In addition to books, the podcast "Traveling Beyond Books" and the lecture series "Premium Class" will also be held.

Along with the publication of Choi Su-cheol's "Camus," "Premium Class Season 5" will open. Season 5, held from January to March, will focus on literature, featuring lectures on the lives and works of Hermann Hesse, Conan Doyle, and Franz Kafka, with two sessions per author.

Choi Su-cheol graduated from Seoul National University’s Department of French Language and Literature and its graduate school. He translated Camus’s "The Stranger" into Korean and wrote the novel "I Am Meursault." He won the Yi Sang Literary Award in 1993 for "The Crucible of Ice" and received the Dongin Literary Award last year.

Choi traveled extensively in Algeria and France, the settings of Camus’s life, experiencing the traces of Camus’s existentialism and literature, and wrote the 16th volume of the Classic Cloud series, "Albert Camus: The Eternal Stranger Under the Mediterranean Sun."

Premium Class Season 6, to be held from May to July, will focus on art. Lectures on Claude Monet, Nam June Paik, Vincent van Gogh, and Gustav Klimt will be held.
