Galaxy S20 Series Release Schedule and Pricing Revealed
S20 Ultra Model Features 5x Optical Zoom and Supports 'Space Zoom'
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] It has been confirmed that the release date for Samsung Electronics' flagship smartphone successor, the Galaxy S20 series, is March 6.
According to IT specialized media PhoneArena and others on the 10th (local time), the new Galaxy S series, previously referred to as Galaxy S11, will be named Galaxy S20, unveiled at the Unpacked event on February 11, and officially released on March 6.
Changing Naming in 2020 to Widen Gap with iPhone 12
The model with the smallest display is expected to be called Galaxy S20, the mid-range product Galaxy S20+, and the largest product Galaxy S20 Ultra. With the arrival of 2020, Samsung is launching products with new naming to signify a new era while strategically aiming to be one step ahead of the iPhone in naming.
Leaked information also includes the prices of the Galaxy S20 series. The Galaxy S20 is reportedly priced from $799 (approximately 928,000 KRW), the S20 5G model at $999 (about 1,160,000 KRW), and the S20 Ultra model at $1,099 (about 1,276,000 KRW). There is speculation that these prices were revealed during negotiations between Samsung and mobile carriers at CES, but it is unclear if these are confirmed prices.
IT media BGR stated, "It is unclear whether this is speculation based on last year's Galaxy S10 series pricing structure or newly leaked detailed information," adding, "Regarding the release schedule, considering that the Galaxy S series has been released in March for the past few years, it is meaningful, but the source cannot be verified."
Model Names: S20, S20+, S20 Ultra
The smallest display model, Galaxy S20, will be released with a 6.2-inch screen. The model name s10e will disappear and be replaced by s20. It is expected to feature an AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. The camera specs are significantly improved, equipped with four lenses including a main camera with up to 108 million pixels, ultra-wide, telephoto, and ToF lenses. The battery capacity is 3730mAh.
The Galaxy S20+ model, the successor to the existing S10, supports a 6.7-inch 2K display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Camera specs include a 108 million pixel main camera, a 48 million pixel telephoto lens, ultra-wide lens, and TOF lens. The battery capacity is 4300mAh.
The highest-spec Galaxy S20 Ultra model has the largest 6.9-inch screen with the same 120Hz refresh rate. It features a 108 million pixel main camera, a 48 million pixel special zoom camera, ultra-wide lens, and ToF lens, with the largest battery capacity of 4900mAh.
The brain of the Galaxy S20 series, the AP, will be equipped with Snapdragon 865 or Exynos 990 depending on the release region, and RAM is expected to start at 8GB with basic storage starting from 256GB.
Differentiation through Camera... S20 Ultra May Support Up to 100x Digital Zoom
The major differentiation of the Galaxy S20 series from previous products is the camera. Among them, the Galaxy S20 Ultra is equipped with a lens supporting 'Space Zoom' featuring 5x optical zoom and up to 100x digital zoom. The code name for the S20 series was 'Hubble,' named after NASA's satellite-type space telescope, which supports this feature. Attention is focused on whether the model equipped with a 108 million pixel main lens and a 48 million pixel telephoto lens supporting 5x optical zoom will attract consumers' choice.
IT specialized media PhoneArena explained, "The Galaxy S20 Ultra is expected to feature the highest-spec optical zoom and high-resolution lens, enabling digital zoom up to 100x. The fact that the S20 Ultra model is slightly thicker than the S20+ model is evidence that it is the only model equipped with the Space Zoom feature," adding, "It is expected to implement 100x zoom functionality combined with the 108 million pixel main camera, and various optical zoom levels may be installed on the S20+ and S20 Ultra models."
