[Asia Economy Reporter Bu Aeri] The passage of the amendment to the Passenger Transport Service Act, commonly known as the 'Tada Ban Law,' has been postponed again.
On the 9th, the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee decided to delay the bill's submission and reconsider it later, taking into account industry opposition. Initially, the committee was expected to handle the Tada Ban Law on this day, but it was ultimately not included in the agenda.
The ruling Democratic Party and the main opposition Liberty Korea Party engaged in a power struggle over the agenda late into the previous night, leading to a halt in negotiations. It is reported that the agenda was then decided by the committee chairperson Yeo Sang-gyu's authority.
A committee official explained, "There are some disagreements from the business sector regarding the Tada Ban Law," adding, "Also, considering the tight schedule due to today's plenary session, the discussion time was limited."
However, given the atmosphere that both ruling and opposition parties aim to pass non-contentious livelihood bills, the Tada Ban Law is expected to be addressed in a future committee meeting.
Ahead of the National Assembly's handling of the Tada Ban Law, Lee Jae-woong, CEO of Socar, continues to oppose it.
Before his second trial the previous day, Lee stated on Facebook, "We do not intend to enter the taxi market to compete with individual or corporate taxis. Rather, we are creating a new market to share and coexist with taxis." He added, "There are many concerns about jobs changing in the AI era," and emphasized, "Especially laws and systems related to jobs do not reflect these changes, so our society must come together to find a social consensus."
Meanwhile, the Legislation and Judiciary Committee plans to attempt the passage of the Data 3 Laws (amendments to the Personal Information Protection Act, Credit Information Act, and Information and Communications Network Act) and three pension-related laws (amendments to the National Pension Act, Basic Pension Act, and Disability Pension Act) on this day.
