Gwanak-gu, Why Did They Encourage Residents to Quit Smoking by Establishing a Successful Smoking Cessation Savings Plan?

[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) has prepared a special smoking cessation program for residents who pledge to quit smoking in the new year of the Year of the Rat.

The district operates a permanent smoking cessation clinic to prevent harm caused by smoking and to promote residents' health. It is open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on the second Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. All programs except for smoking cessation medication prescriptions are free of charge.

In particular, this year, the launch of the ‘Smoking Cessation Success Savings’ in partnership with KEB Hana Bank has attracted more attention.

The procedure is simple. Visit KEB Hana Bank, open a savings account, and then register at the smoking cessation clinic. After receiving more than four counseling sessions through the public health center and being certified as successfully quit smoking at six months, a special interest rate is applied, offering up to a 3.0% preferential interest rate.

This program is expected to strengthen the determination of residents who have resolved to quit smoking in the new year by allowing them to improve their health and financial management simultaneously.

Additionally, one-on-one personalized smoking cessation counseling is provided through blood pressure measurement and nicotine dependence tests, along with support for helpful items such as aroma pipes, acupressure devices, and smoking cessation acupuncture. Those who succeed in quitting smoking for six months will also receive a commemorative gift worth approximately 50,000 KRW.

Anyone wishing to quit smoking, including adolescents, can use the service. For residents who find it difficult to visit the public health center, a mobile smoking cessation clinic visits schools and institutions, offering customized smoking cessation programs.

Moreover, Gwanak-gu Public Health Center has been continuously striving to prevent harm caused by smoking and protect residents' health, having been selected as an excellent institution for smoking cessation treatment cooperation for two consecutive years until last year.

Mayor Park Jun-hee said, “I hope this year will be a year in which residents succeed in quitting smoking with Gwanak-gu Public Health Center and catch two rabbits at once?health and financial benefits. We will actively discover and promote various smoking cessation policies tailored to residents' preferences rather than one-sided anti-smoking campaigns.”
