Operating Various Customized Programs for Residents Including Children, Seniors, Dual-Income Families, and Pregnant Women... Supporting Healthy Eating Habits Through Life Cycle Nutrition Education
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Chae Hyun-il) Public Health Center is launching the ‘Healthy Family Cooking Class’ education program to promote proper eating habits for parents and children to cultivate together.
The Healthy Family Cooking Class is an experiential nutrition education program where children and parents cook together using ingredients that are typically easy to be picky about. Especially considering working families, weekend classes are offered in addition to weekday classes.
The curriculum consists of Food Bridge activities using ingredients and cooking lessons. Food Bridge is a dietary education method designed to reduce the rejection of unfamiliar foods commonly experienced by children aged 2 to 5 by introducing them to raw or processed ingredients to help them become familiar.
The district plans to promote the formation of healthy eating habits and foster a communicative family culture through cooking practice experiences shared by children and parents.
The weekend class (for 1st to 3rd graders in elementary school, held on the third Saturday of every month) starts on the 18th of this month and will run for a total of 12 sessions, while the weekday class (held every Friday for ages 5 to 7) starts on March 20 and will run for a total of 24 sessions.
Each session will accept 20 participants (2 per family, total 10 families) on a first-come, first-served basis, and participation is free of charge. Applications can be made through the Yeongdeungpo-gu Public Health Center Nutrition Plus Center (☎ 2670-4845, 4848).
The district conducts life-cycle-based dietary education to address increasing health issues such as obesity and diabetes caused by westernized eating habits.
To help residents maintain proper eating habits and live healthily, the district operates segmented programs considering age and health status, such as the △Children’s Health Plus Experience Center △Working Mom Strong Child Nutrition Class △Visiting Senior Center Nutrition Class for children, pregnant women, and the elderly.
Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “We hope that children will not only develop healthy eating habits but also strengthen family love and emotional bonds through cooking experiences with their parents. We will strive to establish healthy eating habits among residents by operating various programs tailored to different age groups.”
