[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] On the 7th, the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) urged people not to open and to immediately delete hacking emails titled "Notice of Investigation on Electronic Commerce Violation Acts" that impersonate FTC investigation documents.
According to the FTC, the recently circulated emails impersonate FTC official documents by changing the names of fictitious individuals and investigation notice dates. Opening the attached files can lead to ransomware infection and financial damage.
The FTC explained that official documents related to investigations of legal violations are not sent via email but are presented in writing along with an official ID badge at the investigation site.
The FTC emphasized, "You should regularly install and check antivirus programs on your computer and carefully verify whether the sender's email address is an official government employee address used by government agencies."
If you receive an email impersonating the FTC, you can report it to the Cyber Safety Bureau of the National Police Agency or contact the Korea Internet & Security Agency's Incident Response Center.
