[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] Artificial rain will be conducted in Indonesia, where large-scale flood damage occurred due to heavy rain, to prevent additional heavy rain. Since December 31, heavy rain has fallen in Jakarta and nearby cities, resulting in 43 deaths and tens of thousands of displaced people so far.
According to foreign media, the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced in a statement on the 3rd that it plans to conduct artificial rain to eliminate rain clouds in the Sunda Strait area, where Jakarta and nearby cities are located. Two aircraft will release substances such as sodium chloride, which act as cloud seeds, to cause rain before the rain clouds reach Jakarta. It is known that Indonesia has repeatedly used this artificial rain method to prevent floods or extinguish wildfires.
From the 31st, a massive amount of heavy rain fell across Indonesia. On December 31 alone, 200 to 300 mm of rain poured down, and especially at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in East Jakarta, a record-breaking 377 mm of heavy rain fell. Heavy rain continued until the early morning of January 1, resulting in 43 deaths and about 31,000 displaced people by the 3rd.
