[Asia Economy Reporter Bu Aeri] Naver announced on the 3rd that it will introduce an 'automatic subtitle generation service' utilizing its AI technology platform Clova engine for broadcasting and news content.
Users can watch broadcast news (three terrestrial broadcasters, four general programming channels, and two news channels) on PC, mobile web, and the Naver TV app, with subtitles generated by the AI engine displayed alongside the news videos. This allows users to vividly access video news even in environments where audio content cannot be enjoyed, such as public transportation or public places.
Users can easily enable the subtitle service by setting the 'Subtitles' function located at the bottom right of the video player embedded in articles.
Naver explained that this service was launched due to the advancement of Clova's STT (Speech to Text) engine. STT is an AI technology that converts speech into text and is one of the core technologies used in services that utilize voice information, such as voice search or AI speakers.
The reason high-accuracy subtitles were possible even for video reports with long sentences is that Clova's end-to-end speech recognition engine specialized in long-form speech transcription, called 'Clova NEST,' was introduced, going beyond the short-sentence-focused STT function.
This feature was first applied in the Naver web (PC, mobile) and Naver TV app environments. It is expected to be available for video news viewing through the Naver app within the first quarter.
Yoo Bong-seok, Head of Naver Service Operations, said, "Advanced AI technology can now help users in their daily lives through this service," adding, "In the future, subtitle services using this technology will be available not only for news but also for various video content."
