Gyeonggi Province to Conduct Water Quality Inspections at 318 Agricultural Reservoirs

The Gyeonggi Provincial Government will conduct water quality inspections on 318 agricultural reservoirs to ensure the supply of clean and safe agricultural water.

On the 26th, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government announced that it had established an "Implementation Plan for Water Quality Inspection of Agricultural Reservoirs" and notified mayors, county governors, and the Korea Rural Community Corporation, who manage the reservoir facilities.

The purpose of this implementation plan is to secure reliable water quality data through regular inspections and, based on this data, to stably supply high-quality agricultural water, thereby supporting the foundation for the production and certification of eco-friendly agricultural products.

Under the implementation plan, six general items will be measured once per quarter (four times a year): pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (T-N), total phosphorus (T-P), and suspended solids (SS). In addition, three types of heavy metals will be inspected once in the second quarter (once a year): lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic (As).

The inspections will be carried out independently by the facility managers (cities, counties, and the Korea Rural Community Corporation) through professional water quality testing institutions, while the Gyeonggi Provincial Government will be responsible for operating the inspection system and compiling and analyzing the results.

Before establishing this plan, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government went through several procedures to determine the inspection items, frequency, and methods, including: a work consultation between the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Gyeonggi Provincial Government in December 2025; cooperation on and submission of policy data by the Korea Rural Community Corporation in December 2025; and consultation with the Gyeonggi-do Institute of Health and Environment in January 2026.

Starting with the notification of the implementation plan to agricultural reservoir facility managers, regular inspections will be conducted from the first to the fourth quarter, and the process will conclude with the submission of results in December. Based on the submitted results, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government will comprehensively analyze the water quality status by region and by reservoir, and if water quality improvement is needed, it will carry out separate projects.

Paek Jongmin, Director General of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Biotechnology Bureau of the Gyeonggi Provincial Government, said, "Through this implementation plan, we will be able to strengthen the safety management of agricultural water and support the foundation for eco-friendly production," adding, "We ask that related institutions, including cities, counties, and the Korea Rural Community Corporation, conduct regular water quality inspections thoroughly and, if any abnormal signs are detected, promptly prepare improvement measures and do their utmost to ensure safety management at the production stage of agricultural products."
