Food and a handwritten letter delivered to a 20-year regular customer
Family: "We will display it at the memorial service"
A restaurant in Gilbert, Arizona, in the United States moved the local community after it became known that it had provided a free meal to a regular customer who had been given a terminal diagnosis.
On the 25th, Yonhap News TV reported, citing local station 12 News and others, on the good deed a restaurant in the United States carried out for one of its customers.
Nando's Mexican Cafe, a Mexican restaurant located in Gilbert, recently provided a free meal to Al Weasley, who had been a long-time regular. Al had lived in the area for more than 20 years and had been a frequent patron of the restaurant throughout that time.
He had been battling diabetes, a foot amputation, pancreatitis, and kidney failure for a long time, and after undergoing dialysis treatment for a year, he stopped the treatment because of severe pain. After that, his medical team informed him that he was terminally ill.
As he approached the end of his life, Al wanted to have his favorite restaurant’s food one last time and tried to place an order online, but when the system did not work, he called the restaurant directly to order. During the call, he explained his situation, and after hearing this, the restaurant decided to provide the meal for free. The next day, restaurant staff delivered the food to Al’s home along with a handwritten letter expressing their gratitude. The letter read, "Dinner is on us!"
According to his family, Al fell asleep after receiving the food and did not wake up, but briefly regained consciousness the next day and ate the meal, which became his last meal.
Al’s wife, Roberta, told 12 News in an interview, "It feels really special that that meal became my husband’s last meal," adding, "It reminded me again that there are still good people in this world." She said she plans to display the letter from the restaurant at her husband’s memorial service.
Locally, people are responding warmly, saying that the small act of kindness by one restaurant became a great comfort to an entire family.
