This designated donation was promoted as part of a public-private partnership aimed at strengthening coexistence with the local community and closing gaps in the welfare safety net. It is characterized by the joint participation of the company and the labor union, who came together with a shared commitment to support vulnerable groups in the region.
The donation ceremony, held at the Onsan-eup Administrative Welfare Center, was attended by Park Sungwoong, Head of Management Support at Korea Zinc, Lee Eunsun, Chairman of the Korea Zinc Labor Union, Yoon Jongil, Head of Onsan General Affairs, Park Gwangcheol, Chairman of the Community Security Council, and Yang Hoyoung, Secretary General of the Ulsan Community Chest of Korea.
The donated funds will be used for customized welfare programs targeting vulnerable residents in Onsan-eup. KRW 24 million will be allocated to the "Visiting Happiness Package Support Program," which involves monthly home visits to deliver daily necessities and food and to check on residents' well-being; KRW 6 million will go to the "Warm Winter Heating Oil Delivery Program" for energy-vulnerable households; and KRW 30 million will be invested in the "Lunchbox Support Program" for households at risk of food insecurity.
Starting this year, new programs will also be implemented to respond to the climate crisis and changes in living conditions. KRW 20 million has been allocated to the "Heat Wave and Cold Wave Preparedness Supplies Support Program" for households vulnerable to seasonal disasters; KRW 20 million to the "Study Room Creation Program" to improve the learning environment of children from low-income families; and KRW 150 million to the "Home Repair Support Program" to improve housing conditions for vulnerable households.
Previously, in March last year, the management and labor union of Korea Zinc's Onsan Smelter also delivered a designated donation of KRW 50 million to Onsan-eup. Korea Zinc spends approximately KRW 7 billion to 8 billion each year, equivalent to about 1% of its annual operating profit, on social contribution activities, and continues to provide support across various fields such as child and senior welfare, housing assistance, and culture and arts programs. Employee volunteer activities are also carried out in parallel, and the Onsan Smelter has received the highest grade in the Community Contribution Recognition Program for three consecutive years from 2023 through last year.
Head of Management Support Park Sungwoong said, "We hope that the designated donation jointly prepared by management and labor will be of help to neighbors who have fallen through the welfare safety net," adding, "We will continue to pursue sustainable coexistence with the local community going forward."
