Seo-gu District of Gwangju Metropolitan City is promoting the "2026 Disabled Employment Program" to expand social participation by people with disabilities and strengthen the foundation for their independence.
On the 25th, Seo-gu held safety and health training and job competency training for about 160 participants in the Disabled Employment Program at Deulbul Hall in the Seo-gu Office. The training was prepared to enhance participants' understanding of their duties and to prevent industrial accidents.
The Disabled Employment Program provides customized jobs for people with disabilities, who are a vulnerable group in the labor market, thereby expanding income security and opportunities for social participation. This year, about 160 people with physical, hearing and speech, and visual disabilities will take part in a variety of positions, including general positions (full-time and part-time) and welfare jobs (participatory type).
Participants will carry out public service support work such as assisting with administrative work at dong community service centers and social welfare facilities, environmental maintenance, mail sorting, and meal service support.
In particular, Seo-gu expanded the scope of job types by increasing the number of participants in the organizing and storage specialization project for people with hearing and speech disabilities, which received strong positive feedback from residents last year, and by newly developing and adding a project to monitor the use of disposable products. In addition, the district enhanced the professionalism and efficiency of the program by establishing cooperative systems with private organizations such as "Good City Social Cooperative."
The training that day focused on practical content that can be applied immediately in the workplace, including safety and health, prevention of sexual harassment, improvement of disability awareness, and methods of communication in the workplace.
One participant in the training said, "The training focused on content that is truly necessary for my work, which was very helpful," adding, "Based on what I learned, I will work safely and with a strong sense of responsibility."
Seo-gu District Mayor Kim Ikang said, "Social participation by people with disabilities is not a choice but an essential right," and added, "We will continue to actively support people with disabilities so that they can achieve stable independence within the local community by consistently discovering and expanding customized jobs that take into account different types of disabilities."
Meanwhile, over the past four years, Seo-gu has provided jobs to about 700 people with disabilities through the Disabled Employment Program, thereby offering a practical foundation for their independence.
