Hanam's Misa Culture Street Nighttime Cleaning... Mayor Hee Hyeonjae Joins In with Broom in Hand

Hanam City in Gyeonggi Province is making every effort to enhance the effectiveness of its ongoing “Misa Culture Street Nighttime Cleaning Pilot Operation,” which is being carried out to create a pleasant urban environment and proactively respond to complaints about trash during nighttime hours. Through this pilot program, the city plans to immediately address practical issues identified in the field and improve the pedestrian environment to a level that citizens can tangibly feel.

According to Hanam City on February 25, Mayor Hee Hyeonjae went out to clean the streets on the night of the 21st together with municipal environmental officers, who are on the front line of environmental cleanup activities, in order to personally check the effectiveness of the policy.

Armed with a broom and trash bags, Mayor Hee Hyeonjae personally picked up litter discarded along the roadside as he walked an approximately 760-meter section from the commercial district near Misa Station, which is crowded with citizens and visitors, toward Misa Lake Park.

During the nighttime cleaning, Mayor Hee Hyeonjae confirmed that the voluntary cooperation of citizens is essential for the successful establishment of the policy. In particular, he expressed concern about the indiscriminate disposal of cigarette butts observed during the collection process and urged all citizens to demonstrate a mature sense of civic responsibility so that a clean Misa Culture Street can be created.

In addition, Hanam City is not only collecting trash but is also carrying out a large-scale environmental improvement project for the section stretching from Misa Culture Street to Mangwolcheon Linear Park. The city plans to transform it into a premium street that citizens will want to visit again by not only repairing sidewalks and roadside flower beds, but also fundamentally improving the streetscape through the planting of hydrangeas and other diverse vegetation.

During the pilot period, which runs until April 25, the city plans to conduct a detailed analysis of the trend in civil complaints and data on street cleanliness. Based on this, it will make a final review on whether to transition the nighttime cleaning system to full-scale regular operation and whether to expand the target areas.

Mayor Hee Hyeonjae said, “A clean Hanam can only be achieved when citizens join in the efforts of environmental officers who are doing their best in the field,” and he appealed, “Please actively cooperate in making Hanam a premium city by practicing small actions, such as not throwing trash on the roadside.”
