Improving Steep Slopes Caused by Soil Erosion
Putting Visitor Safety First
Goyang Special City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Donghwan) announced on February 25, 2026, that it will carry out restoration work on the pedestrian path near Jingangjeong on the "DMZ Peace Trail Section 4-1" to ensure safe walking tours for visitors.
The restoration section covers approximately 50.3 meters of the "DMZ Peace Trail Section 4-1 (pedestrian path in front of Jingangjeong)" in the area of 78-9 Haengjunae-dong. In this section, soil erosion has recently created a steep slope, and concerns over safety risks for visitors have been continuously raised.
Accordingly, the city has completed all related administrative procedures, including approval for changes to the state-designated cultural heritage site conditions, and plans to finish the construction within the first half of the year to create a safe environment for visitors.
Through this project, the city plans to install eco-friendly sleeper stairs (30.7 meters) and a treated-wood deck on the steep slope, restore the eroded soil, and repair the entrance gate, thereby creating a safe walking environment for citizens and tourists visiting the DMZ Peace Trail.
A city official said, "Since the DMZ Peace Trail is a symbolic hiking route that many citizens love to visit, we will promptly improve the walking environment in the Jingangjeong section to eliminate any blind spots in safety," adding, "We will continue to make every effort in ongoing management so that everyone can safely enjoy both the history and nature of the Han River estuary in Goyang."
Meanwhile, as inconvenience to visitors is expected during the construction period, the city plans to thoroughly manage on-site safety by installing safety fences and placing information signs.
