Goyang City and Incheon Main Customs Sign MOU to Support the Ecological Environment of Wildlife in Janghang Wetland

Establishing a Stable Wildlife Feed Supply System Using Confiscated Agricultural Products

Goyang Special City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Donghwan) and Incheon Main Customs announced on the 25th that they had signed a memorandum of understanding on the 24th at the Janghang Wetland Ecology Center to support the ecological environment of wildlife inhabiting the Janghang Wetland.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Goyang Special City, the Commissioner of Incheon Main Customs, and other key officials, and proceeded in the following order: a tour of the Janghang Wetland Ecology Center, the signing of the memorandum of understanding, and a Hall of Fame plaque unveiling ceremony.

This memorandum of understanding was prepared to formalize the practice of Incheon Main Customs donating confiscated agricultural products such as black beans and mung beans to Goyang Special City so they can be used as winter feed for wildlife. Incheon Main Customs donated 1 ton in January last year and 30 tons in December.

Through this agreement, the two institutions decided to establish a safe and stable supply system for grains used as winter feed for wildlife. Incheon Main Customs will select items suitable as wildlife feed from among the confiscated agricultural products and deliver them free of charge to Goyang Special City, while the city will thoroughly store and manage them and plan and carry out events to feed wildlife in the Janghang Wetland.

Ko Seokjin, Commissioner of Incheon Main Customs, said, "Through cooperation between central government agencies and local governments, we have been able to achieve two outcomes at the same time: reducing the cost of disposing of confiscated goods and protecting the ecosystem," adding, "We hope that, with this agreement, turning confiscated agricultural products into feed resources for wildlife will take root as a sustainable cooperative project."

Lee Donghwan, Mayor of Goyang Special City, said, "Reusing confiscated grains that were scheduled for disposal as feed for winter migratory birds in the Janghang Wetland contributes to ecological conservation," and added, "We will link this with the drone-based migratory bird feeding system currently being promoted by Goyang Special City to build a safe and efficient ecological conservation model."

Going forward, the two institutions plan to continue identifying detailed support measures to implement the memorandum of understanding and to actively cooperate so that it can provide practical help in improving the ecological environment of the Janghang Wetland.
