Gwangju City to Hire 1,000 Public Officials This Year, Reflecting Demand from Metro Line 2 and More

624 Local Public Officials and 354 Public Institution Employees to Be Hired
Recruitment Tripled from Last Year...278 Positions at Gwangju Transportation Corporation

Gwangju Metropolitan City will newly hire about 1,000 public officials this year. The expansion of recruitment is attributed to growing administrative demand, including the opening of Metro Line 2 and the expansion of welfare policies.

Gwangju City to Hire 1,000 Public Officials This Year, Reflecting Demand from Metro Line 2 and More Gwangju Mayor Kang Gijung is briefing reporters in the city hall press room on the afternoon of the 24th about the largest-ever recruitment plan for new personnel in preparation for the opening of Metro Line 2.

The number of local public officials to be hired has increased significantly compared to the recent three-year average of 144 (117 in 2023, 105 in 2024, and 210 in 2025). Gwangju City explained that administrative demand has grown due to the nationwide rollout of the integrated care policy, the push for administrative integration between Gwangju and South Jeolla Province, discussions on the integrated relocation of the civil-military airport, and preparations for the opening of Metro Line 2.

By field, welfare and health personnel will be expanded, including 107 social welfare positions, 52 nursing positions, 10 public health positions, and 1 public health clinic position. The city also plans to recruit 272 administrative staff members (including Grade 7 officials), a significant increase from last year.

Recruitment at public institutions will also be the largest ever. A total of 354 employees will be hired to work at institutions under Gwangju City, of which 278 will be recruited by Gwangju Transportation Corporation. This is due to the large-scale need for operating personnel ahead of the opening of Metro Line 2. Gwangju Transportation Corporation plans to increase its workforce in stages, hiring 235 people in the second half of this year and 234 in the first half of next year.

Gwangju City plans to continue using special government measures related to integration even after this round of recruitment, in order to promote job creation and foster local industries.

Gwangju Mayor Kang Gijeong said, "We will link policy achievements such as Gwangju-style integrated care to quality jobs, so that young people can have a foundation to stay in the region."
