The Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education announced that, in order to respond proactively to the rapidly changing industrial environment and enhance the educational capacity of vocational high schools, it will change the names of two private specialized high schools in the Daegu area as of March 1, 2026.
The schools whose names will be changed are Daegu Girls' Commercial High School and Daejung Metal Industry High School. Each school will pursue sweeping changes to foster future industrial leaders, while at the same time inheriting the educational assets and traditions built up over several decades.
First, Daegu Girls' Commercial High School, which opened in 1953 and has, for more than 70 years, produced outstanding local talent in finance and commerce while serving as a cradle of vocational education for women, will take a leap forward under its new name, Daemyeong High School. Through this name change, Daemyeong High School aims to move beyond its previous, commerce-focused specialized image and establish a flexible educational system that encompasses the characteristics of a wide range of academic tracks.
In particular, to maximize the school’s competitiveness, a full-scale reorganization of departments will be carried out in parallel. The existing traditional Finance Department and Business Management Department will be abolished, and new departments will be created that reflect the latest industrial trends and student preferences: the AI Convergence Business Department, the Digital Marketing Department, and the Pet Service Department. Through this, the school plans to dramatically enhance its brand value.
In addition, Daejung Metal Industry High School, which was founded in 1978 and has contributed to national industrial development by training skilled technicians in the fields of precision machinery and metal processing, will change its name to Daegu Smart High School.
The new name fully breaks away from the heavy, traditional manufacturing image conveyed by the words "metal" and "industry," and embodies a strong commitment to transforming into a school centered on advanced technologies such as smart factories and intelligent control systems.
Along with this, the school is moving away from the previous recruitment-by-track system and shifting to recruitment by department, including the Precision Machinery Department and Automation Machinery Department, while strengthening smart design and IT convergence curricula. As a coeducational school, it is making every effort to create a smart technology education environment in which all students, regardless of gender, can be satisfied.
The Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education expects that this round of school name changes and departmental restructuring will serve as an important turning point that goes beyond a simple change of names, enabling an active response to rapidly changing student recruitment conditions such as the decline in the school-age population and promoting the sustainable growth of the schools. Through this, it plans to support specialized high schools so that they can be reborn as attractive educational institutions that meet the needs of local communities and future industries.
Daegu Superintendent of Education Kang Eunhee stated, "Because this is a process of adding contemporary value to the precious history of each school, we will spare no administrative and financial support to ensure that the new names and reorganized departments can take root stably in the field," adding, "We will continue to provide full support so that students in Daegu can grow confidently into protagonists in a changing world of work."
