Bucheon City in Gyeonggi Province has been selected as an excellent institution in the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's "2025 Local Government Innovation Evaluation," earning the distinction for the third consecutive year.
Bucheon City ranked in the top 15% in the city category, which is the evaluation group for basic local governments, and its creation of innovation outcomes that citizens can tangibly feel was cited as a key reason for its selection.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety conducts an annual innovation evaluation of 243 local governments nationwide to strengthen their autonomous innovation capabilities and to drive the creation of innovation outcomes that residents can experience in their daily lives.
This year's evaluation was carried out by evaluation group based on 10 detailed indicators, including the innovation leadership of the head of the institution, strengthening resident communication and participation, revitalizing public-private cooperation, improving services through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies, improving resident services, and eliminating blind spots in administration.
Bucheon City received consistently high marks across various areas, including participation in innovation activities, efforts to spread innovation outcomes, strengthening resident communication and participation, building a foundation for an AI-driven transformation, promoting flagship innovation projects, and enhancing public satisfaction.
Practical initiatives to address local issues were also recognized as achievements. These included operating the Innovation Narae Research Group, a government-academia policy research association; holding exhibitions of best practices in innovation and proactive administration; efforts to eradicate so-called "Makjang" YouTubers and BJs around Bucheon Station; and operating the Onmaeum AI Welfare Call service. The city's efforts to solve problems in cooperation with citizens and to identify and implement innovative projects incorporating digital technologies also contributed to its selection.
Lim Gwonbin, Director General for Planning and Coordination of Bucheon City, said, "Being selected as an excellent institution in the local government innovation evaluation for three consecutive years is the result of all our employees working together for administrative innovation that citizens can truly feel," and added, "We will continue to identify and implement innovative policies that bring real changes to citizens' lives."
