Yangcheon-gu in Seoul (District Mayor Lee Kijae) announced on February 20 that it will change the seller selection method for the "Haewuri Nanumjangteo" from a first-come, first-served basis to a computerized lottery, and will be recruiting participants from February 23 to March 6.
Haewuri Nanumjangteo is a resident-participation event where local residents directly sell or exchange secondhand items such as clothing, books, and toys that are no longer used at home, thereby putting resource reuse into practice. Up to now, sellers had been selected on a first-come, first-served basis, but as early closing of registration had recently become frequent, the district switched to a lottery system this year so that residents who lack information or have difficulty using the internet can also participate on an equal footing.
The first market after the introduction of the computerized lottery will be held at Yangcheon Park on March 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Applications can be submitted via the Yangcheon-gu Integrated Reservation System (www.yangcheon.go.kr>reservation) or by visiting the Cleaning Administration Division, and the lottery results will be announced on March 11 through the district office website and individual notifications.
On the day of the event, there will be a free sharing booth where people can donate items without prior registration, and a donation box will be set up to allow voluntary contributions of 10% of sales proceeds to the Yangcheon Love Welfare Foundation. A "Pack Moa Roll" booth will also be operated, where 1 roll of toilet paper is given in exchange for 0.5 kg of paper packs. Items remaining after the event will be donated to the Yangcheon Regional Self-Sufficiency Center.
The market is held every year from March to October, excluding the hottest summer period (June to August). Last year, it was held 5 times, raising about 1.61 million won in donations and collecting 280 kg of paper packs.
Yangcheon-gu District Mayor Lee Kijae said, "By introducing the computerized lottery method, we are now able to provide fair participation opportunities to more residents," adding, "We will continue to enhance resident satisfaction through fair and transparent operations."
