Samsung Research America-based researcher honored
Cumulative total of eight recipients, the most in the industry
Samsung Electronics announced on the 19th that Eko Onggosanusi, a researcher at Samsung Research America (SRA), had been selected on the 13th (local time) as a recipient of the "2025 Excellence Award" at the 3GPP international standardization meeting held in Gothenburg, Sweden.
3GPP, the global mobile communications standardization body, established the Excellence Award in 2012 and has since been honoring individuals who have contributed to the development of next-generation mobile communication standards. With this latest recognition, Samsung Electronics now has a cumulative total of eight recipients of the 3GPP Excellence Award, setting a new industry record for the most awards.
Researcher Onggosanusi has been active in the physical layer (RAN WG1) field at SRA, an organization under Samsung Research, which is the advanced research organization within Samsung Electronics' Device eXperience (DX) Division. In particular, he received high praise for his contributions in the field of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology, which earned him the honor of this award.
MIMO is a technology that uses multiple antennas to improve data transmission efficiency and coverage. It is a core technology that underpins 4G LTE and 5G communications and is also expected to play a role in enhancing user experience in 6G.
Researcher Onggosanusi serves as the rapporteur for the 3GPP "Full Dimension MIMO (FD-MIMO)" standardization work, leading the standardization of MIMO technology for 6G. A rapporteur in the 3GPP standardization organization plays the role of coordinating the views of numerous telecommunications companies around the world and deriving technical consensus.
Researcher Onggosanusi said, "I am pleased to be able to take part in Samsung's role in contributing to 3GPP standardization," adding, "I will continue to do my best to help create next-generation communication technology standards through cooperation in the 3GPP domain."
