The crime scene is located near the large billboard of Ezaki Glico, a confectionery company, which features a running man. The area is famous as a spot where tourists visiting Osaka take commemorative photos, but it is also known that there is a nearby hangout where delinquent youths with nowhere to go tend to gather.

On the same morning, police arrested the suspect, a 21-year-old man, on an emergency warrant on a road about 1.5 kilometers from the scene. The suspect is said to have frequently gone back and forth through the youth hangout area near the Glico billboard and to have been acquainted with the three victims who were stabbed.

The Yomiuri Shimbun reported that the suspect told police, "I only meant to threaten them," and "I did not intend to kill."
