Crime committed at a commercial building in Gyerim-dong, Gwangju
Dissatisfied with request to end relationship last year
A man in his 60s who, out of spite over being told to break up, threatened an acquaintance in her 70s with a weapon in broad daylight in the middle of downtown has been arrested by the police.
Gwangju Dongbu Police Station announced on February 16 that they had urgently arrested and were investigating Mr. A (61) on suspicion of aggravated intimidation.
Mr. A is suspected of threatening Ms. B (a woman in her 70s) by brandishing a weapon at around 12:30 p.m. on the previous day inside the Gwangju branch building of the Korea Racing Authority in Gyerim-dong, Dong-gu, Gwangju.
During the incident, Ms. B suffered a minor injury when the weapon grazed her, but it was determined that, fortunately, the injury was not serious enough to require transport to a hospital.
According to the police investigation, Mr. A had harbored resentment since December last year after Ms. B told him, "Let's stop seeing each other" and "Don't contact me." When he happened to run into Ms. B on that day, he took out the weapon he had been carrying in advance and committed the crime.
The police, who were dispatched after receiving a report from a nearby witness, arrested Mr. A at the scene in the act.
In view of the seriousness of the case and concerns about repeat offending, the police plan to seek an arrest warrant for Mr. A.
