Tom Cruise And Brad Pitt’s Rooftop Brawl: “Hollywood May Be Done”...AI Video Shocks Industry

U.S. Film Association, Japanese Cabinet Office Protest "Copyright Infringement"

Hollywood has been shaken as Seedance 2.0, an artificial intelligence (AI) video generation model launched by Chinese big tech company ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has made its way into the United States.

Overseas media outlets such as The Hollywood Reporter and Variety reported on the 13th (local time) that the film industry was in shock as a 15-second video posted on social media (SNS) by film director Lowry Robinson spread rapidly. The video he shared shows Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in an intense fistfight on a building rooftop. Robinson added that it was "created in Seedance 2 with a two-line prompt."

Rhett Reese, a Hollywood screenwriter who wrote works such as "Deadpool & Wolverine" and "Zombieland," also shared the video, saying, "I hate to say it, but we are probably done," and, "Before long, a single person sitting in front of a computer will be able to create a work that is indistinguishable from the movies Hollywood is putting out now." He went on to say, "If someone with the talent and vision of Christopher Nolan were to make something with it, the result would be tremendous."

A digital creator commented, "I studied digital filmmaking for seven years, but after seeing Seedance 2.0, 90% of that has become useless," adding, "The traditional film industry is quietly heading toward its terminus, even as a completely new and unknown era is opening up."

The Motion Picture Association (MPA) immediately pushed back, claiming that the model infringes copyrights. Charles Rivkin, MPA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), said, "The Chinese AI service Seedance 2.0, in just a single day, massively and without authorization used works protected by U.S. copyright," and criticized, "Launching the service without meaningful safeguards to prevent infringement is an act of disregarding copyright law, which protects creators' rights and underpins the jobs of millions of Americans." He went on to stress, "ByteDance must immediately cease its infringing activities."

On the same day, the actors' union SAG-AFTRA also condemned ByteDance, calling it "blatant copyright infringement" and stating, "This infringement includes the unauthorized use of our members' voices and likenesses." The union added, "This is unacceptable and undermines human actors' ability to earn a living," and, "Seedance 2.0 ignores the law, ethics, industry standards, and the basic principle of consent." It concluded in its statement, "AI development must be accompanied by responsibility, but there is no such element here."

Meanwhile, Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun reported that Japan's Cabinet Office has identified that videos generated by Seedance 2.0 featuring Japanese animation characters such as "Ultraman" and "Detective Conan" are spreading online. In response, the Cabinet Office the previous day requested that ByteDance's Japan subsidiary promptly submit its response policy. Economic Security Minister Kimi Onoda said at a press conference, "If Japanese content is being used without the permission of the copyright holders, we cannot overlook that situation," adding, "We will work to improve the situation while communicating with ByteDance."

The test version of Seedance 2.0 was released on the 7th, followed by the full version on the 12th.
