Fierce Fight With Kangaroo to Save Pet Dog...“Injuries on the Level of a Car Accident”

Seriously injured while trying to stop attack on pet dog in Victoria
Experts: "Kangaroos perceive humans and dogs as predators"

A man in Australia was seriously injured while trying to stop a kangaroo that was attacking his pet dog.

On the 9th (local time), Australian media outlet 3AW reported that a man named Cole, who lives in the state of Victoria, got into a fierce fight after seeing a kangaroo attacking his pet dog.

At the time, Cole tried to stop the kangaroo with a stick. However, when the dog managed to get away, the kangaroo immediately charged at him instead. Cole said, "That kangaroo came at me like a rocket. I think it attacked me for about 25 seconds." The kangaroo violently assaulted him, grabbing him by the hair and banging his head. Overpowered, Cole was only able to escape when a friend struck the kangaroo with a shovel.

Cole suffered 7 cm-deep wounds on both sides of his abdomen and serious injuries to his head and back. The hospital described his condition as "injuries on the level of a car accident." The kangaroo involved in the incident fled the scene.

In Australia, it is not uncommon for kangaroos to display this kind of aggression. In 2023, the story of former police officer Mick Moloney, who confronted a kangaroo with his bare hands near the Murray River after it threatened a large dog, drew public attention. Footage of the incident spread via TikTok, Reddit, and other platforms. His opponent was an adult eastern grey kangaroo standing 2 meters tall and weighing 55 kilograms, and although Moloney injured his ribs, he managed to save his dog.

At the time, a representative of the wildlife support organization Wildlife Victoria said, "As wild animals, kangaroos regard humans and dogs as predators," and urged, "In areas where kangaroos are frequently seen, keep a close eye on your pets, and if they go out of sight, call their name to check that they respond." The representative added, "If you come face to face with a kangaroo, never approach it directly, and instead contact the center's emergency response service team."

In 2022, there was also a reported case in which a man in his seventies died after being attacked by his pet kangaroo. It was the first death in Australia caused by a kangaroo since 1936. Experts have stressed the need for extreme caution, saying, "Even tamed animals still retain their wild instincts."
