Ruling Party Lawmakers' Group for Withdrawal of Indictment Against Lee Jaemyung Officially Launched

87 Democratic Party lawmakers including Lee Geontae

A group of Democratic Party of Korea lawmakers calling for the withdrawal of the indictment in President Lee Jaemyung's criminal cases and pushing for a parliamentary investigation (abbreviated as "Gongchimo") was officially launched on the 12th with 87 members.

On the 12th at the National Assembly press office, Democratic Party of Korea lawmakers participating in a group to push for the withdrawal of prosecution and a parliamentary probe into President Lee Jaemyung's case are holding an inaugural press conference. Yonhap News

Representative Lee Geontae, who served as legal spokesperson for the Democratic Party when President Lee was its leader, held a press conference at the National Assembly press hall that day and said of the purpose of the group, "The National Assembly, which represents the people, will lay bare before the public the full reality of the fabricated indictment by political prosecutors."

Representative Lee said, "Right now, under the leadership of the Democratic Party of Korea, the dismantling of the prosecution in the Republic of Korea is imminent," adding, "There remains a task that can by no means be postponed: correcting the fabricated indictment brought by the Yoon Suk Yeol administration's political prosecutors against President Lee Jaemyung."

He went on, "Because of the fabricated indictment by political prosecutors, President Lee was brought to trial on a total of eight counts, including the Daejang-dong case, the Ssangbangwool remittance-to-North-Korea case, and the perjury subornation case," and argued, "Although the trials were halted after he was elected president, the fabricated indictment itself has not been discarded. An abnormal situation continues in which a non-existent crime has been manufactured, constricting the head of state's conduct of state affairs."

He also said, "The evidence, testimony, and surrounding circumstances of the fabricated indictment by political prosecutors who targeted President Lee are already more than sufficiently revealed," and pointed out, "The prosecution has neither apologized nor taken any responsible measures. Those who abused prosecutorial power are not only refusing to acknowledge this but are clinging to excuses, and they have not received any punishment commensurate with their actions."

He continued, "We cannot leave unattended this situation in which justice has collapsed and truth has been concealed," and declared, "The National Assembly will now step up and take responsibility."

Representative Lee also called for a parliamentary investigation. He said, "We will proceed step by step with the withdrawal of the indictment, the parliamentary investigation, and even improvements to related systems," adding, "The National Assembly will take responsibility to nullify the fabricated indictment by political prosecutors against President Lee, restore damaged democracy, and reestablish collapsed justice."

Representative Park Sungjoon will serve as standing representative of Gongchimo, and Representatives Kim Seungwon and Yoon Kunyoung will serve as co-representatives. The first meeting is scheduled to be held on the 23rd at the National Assembly Members' Office Building.
