A Preemptive Measure to Strengthen Community Safety
The police are promoting a voluntary surrender of weapons to prevent serious crimes involving bladed or deadly weapons.
The Geumcheon Police Station in Seoul announced on February 9 that it will implement a policy to promote the voluntary surrender of firearms and other weapons from February 23 to May 29. This initiative has been prepared to encourage the voluntary return of weapons that could potentially be used in serious crimes, thereby preventing offenses involving the use of deadly weapons. It is a preemptive measure to strengthen community safety.
Items subject to return include firearms such as shotguns, air rifles, and powder-actuated tools that have been licensed by the police, as well as crossbows, swords, and stun guns. Any resident whose registered address is in Geumcheon District may visit the Crime Prevention and Public Order Division of the Geumcheon Police Station and apply for return, regardless of which police station originally issued the possession permit.
Weapons voluntarily surrendered will be stored in the armory of the Geumcheon Police Station and then collectively destroyed at the end of the year. Incentives will be provided to those who participate in the policy.
Chief Baek Hye-kyung said, "The goal is to create a safe environment for the prevention of serious crimes," adding, "We hope that, through active participation by residents, Geumcheon District will be reborn as an even safer and more peaceful community."
