Central District Prosecutors' Office Bolsters Human Rights Protection Department to Handle Surge in Police Warrant Requests

Central District Prosecutors' Office Bolsters Human Rights Protection Department to Handle Surge in Police Warrant Requests Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, Seocho-gu, Seoul. Kang Jinhyung, Reporter

On February 9, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office announced, "In line with the first-half personnel reshuffle of prosecutors, we reassigned one prosecutor from the Anti-Corruption Investigation Department to the Human Rights Protection Department, increasing the total headcount from five to six," adding, "Of the six, three have been appointed as deputy chief prosecutors with extensive experience in a wide range of fields."

This measure comes as the number of warrant requests by the police has surged sharply due to the recent expansion of direct investigations by the police, creating a greater need to strengthen efficient judicial oversight that both promptly supports police investigations and restricts coercive investigative practices that may infringe on human rights.

According to the prosecution, compared with 2023, the number of search and seizure warrant requests filed by the police last year increased by 25.7%, arrest warrants by 12%, and communication warrants by about 12.7%.

A prosecution official stated, "We will continue our efforts to protect the public from crime by making prompt decisions on whether to file warrant requests submitted by the police and by reasonably requesting supplementary investigations, while also ensuring that the human rights of the public are protected throughout the entire investigative process."
