Case Revealed via Social Media...Fact-Finding Team Dispatched
Student's Condition Confirmed to Be Normal
The Thai education authorities have launched an investigation after it was revealed that a teacher forced a student to do 800 squats for failing to submit homework.
According to local media outlets including Thairath on the 5th (local time), the Office of the Basic Education Commission under the Ministry of Education announced that it had confirmed that a teacher at a secondary school in Lopburi Province in central Thailand had subjected a student to excessive corporal punishment, and that it had immediately launched a fact-finding investigation.
The incident spread nationwide in Thailand after the student's father revealed that "my son was forced to do 800 squats for not submitting his homework and was hospitalized with severe leg pain."
The student expressed a desire to continue attending the school, but is reported to be hoping to transfer to another class because anxiety symptoms have persisted since the incident. It has also been confirmed that his kidney function is normal and his muscle enzyme levels are stable, but he is continuing to receive rehabilitation treatment.
The commission stated that it had "initially confirmed that the corporal punishment did in fact take place," and explained that it had dispatched a dedicated fact-checking team to the site immediately after the case became known via social media.
The governor of Lopburi Province also issued a statement and ordered the relevant officials to visit the student and his family to review what support they were receiving.
