LG CNS Partners with FuriosaAI... Introducing Platform NPUs to Agentic AI

Applying FuriosaAI Renegade NPUs to "AgenticWorks"
Improving power and cost efficiency...advancing Korea's flagship AI model
Targeting the public-sector AX market

LG CNS is partnering with AI semiconductor company FuriosaAI to develop neural processing unit (NPU)-based AI services and will target the public-sector AI transformation (AX) market.

LG CNS announced on the 5th that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with FuriosaAI at its headquarters at LG Sciencepark in Magok, Seoul to expand cooperation in the AI infrastructure business. Key executives including Kim Taehun, Vice President and Head of the AI Cloud Business Division at LG CNS, and Paek Junho, CEO of FuriosaAI, attended the signing ceremony.

FuriosaAI is an AI semiconductor startup that designs and develops NPUs, semiconductors specialized for AI computation. FuriosaAI's second-generation NPU, Renegade (RNGD), not only delivers the high performance required for large-scale AI services, but also reduces power consumption and operating costs compared with graphics processing units (GPUs). In January, FuriosaAI successfully began mass production after receiving 4,000 RNGD units from TSMC.

The two companies will strengthen their collaboration within the "proprietary AI foundation model" project, in which they are participating as part of an LG AI Research Institute consortium. LG CNS will be responsible for optimizing the performance and commercializing AI services based on K-EXAONE (EXAONE), a proprietary AI model that applies FuriosaAI's RNGD. FuriosaAI will provide a stable supply of RNGD along with NPU-related technical support.

Through this, the two companies plan to reinforce a sovereign AI ecosystem comprising a homegrown AI model, services, infrastructure, and AI semiconductors, and to provide services optimized for the public AX market.

As the first phase of the collaboration, LG CNS will apply FuriosaAI NPUs to the infrastructure running its in-house developed enterprise agentic AI platform, AgenticWorks, and conduct technology verification. Agentic AI autonomously sets goals and performs complex work on behalf of people. This makes high-performance, high-efficiency infrastructure essential, and the companies plan to use NPU-based infrastructure to improve both the power efficiency and operational efficiency of agentic AI services.

The two companies will also validate performance optimization technologies for NPU-based GPU as a Service (GPUaaS). GPUaaS is a model in which users rent as many cloud-based GPUs as needed, enabling them to leverage a high-performance computing environment without building actual GPU servers. The companies plan to apply NPUs at every stage, including AI training, AI service operation, and inference.

"Through our collaboration with FuriosaAI, we will secure NPU-based AI infrastructure technology and expert talent so that customers can use agentic AI more efficiently," said Kim Taehun, Vice President and Head of the AI Cloud Business Division at LG CNS. "By working with LG AI Research Institute, we will help advance Korea's flagship AI model and contribute to the development of the domestic AI industry," he added.
