Unauthorized Breach of Airport Security in Spain
Flight Delayed for Over Two Hours Due to Rampage
Similar Incidents Put Airport Security Vulnerabilities Under Scrutiny
At Manises Airport in Valencia, Spain, a man climbed onto the top of a passenger aircraft, danced and ran around for about 10 minutes, causing such a disturbance that the flight was delayed by more than two hours.
On February 2, international media outlets including the New York Post reported that a man had breached airport security at Manises Airport in Valencia, Spain, climbed onto the aircraft and spent around 10 minutes dancing and engaging in other disruptive behavior.

The incident occurred on the morning of January 31, when a Vueling Airlines Airbus A320 passenger jet at Manises Airport was preparing for boarding. The man, a Moroccan national in his 20s, unlawfully entered the airport’s secure area and accessed the upper part of the aircraft via the boarding stairs. He climbed onto the aircraft, drank a beverage, spat it onto the surface, and caused a disturbance by throwing the can. He was then seen sprinting across the top of the aircraft twice while mocking airline staff. Passengers and employees at the scene were deeply shocked, and the flight was delayed for about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Airport security officers immediately responded and attempted to restrain the man, and after about 10 minutes of persuasion, he voluntarily came down from the aircraft. He was then taken directly from the scene to a psychiatric hospital, and it has been reported that a detailed assessment of his mental condition is currently under way. The incident has raised serious alarm among Spain’s aviation security authorities. Experts have pointed out that his actions may constitute not only bizarre behavior, but also violations of public order, threats to aircraft safety, and unlawful intrusion, meaning he could face criminal penalties such as fines or imprisonment. However, if a mental illness is confirmed, there is also a possibility that he could be subject to involuntary hospitalization and a treatment order.

Similar cases have continued to occur around the world. In 2022, a man was arrested at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in the United States after unlawfully entering the runway and attempting to approach an aircraft wheel, and in 2021 in India, a man who had climbed onto an aircraft to take a selfie was electrocuted and killed. In 2023, environmental activists occupied a runway at Frankfurt Airport in Germany in an attempt to block aircraft from taking off. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regards unauthorized access to aircraft or runways as a serious violation of aviation security and has recommended that countries establish strict standards for penalties.
Against this backdrop, the Valencia Airport incident has exposed vulnerabilities in airport security and prompted calls for an urgent strengthening of security systems to prevent similar incidents in the future. It has also highlighted the pressing need to establish measures for managing the safety of people with mental illnesses in public spaces.
