Nomination Committee to Conduct In-Depth Review of 102 Candidates
The Democratic Party of Korea has classified three incumbent county mayors in South Jeolla Province as still subject to review in its preliminary candidate qualification screening conducted ahead of the June 3 local elections.
According to the party's South Jeolla Provincial Chapter on the 4th, the preliminary candidate qualification screening for the 9th nationwide local elections found that, among 653 aspirants in the South Jeolla region, 551 were deemed qualified, while 102 were transferred to the Nomination Management Committee for an in-depth review.
In particular, the list of those still under review includes incumbent heads of local governments: Kim Cheolwoo, Mayor of Boseong County; Jang Seil, Mayor of Yeonggwang County; and Kim Hanjong, Mayor of Jangseong County.
By region, in Yeosu, Lee Gwangil, Vice Chairman of the South Jeolla Provincial Council, and former National Assembly member Lee Yongju failed to pass the screening. In Goheung, former Goheung Police Station Chief Kim Hakyoung and former President of the Goheung County Sports Council An Jeongmin did not pass the review.
In Suncheon, former South Jeolla Provincial Council member Oh Hageun, who ran for mayor in the last local elections, was excluded.
In Yeongam, former Yeongam County Mayor Jeon Dongpyeong failed to pass the preliminary qualification screening, as did South Jeolla Provincial Council member Cha Youngsu and Gangjin County Council member Kim Bomi in Gangjin, Wando County Council member Kim Shin in Wando, and former South Jeolla Provincial Council member Moon Haengju in Hwasun.
Those excluded in the preliminary candidate qualification screening may file an objection within 48 hours from the date they are notified, and the Democratic Party of Korea plans to conduct additional in-depth reviews if objections are filed.
In this screening, it is reported that most of the nine Naju City Council members under prosecution investigation on suspicion of giving and receiving money during the leadership election process received a qualified judgment.
The South Jeolla Provincial Chapter requested emergency disciplinary action against them from the party's central leadership in April last year, but it is said that no disciplinary procedures have been carried out because the prosecution's investigation has not been completed.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party of Korea ruled eight people unqualified in total, including one candidate for head of a local government, three candidates for metropolitan council seats, three candidates for basic council seats, and one applicant for a proportional representative seat, but did not disclose their names.
