Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province will subsidize the subscription fee for ChatGPT for local youth.

Previously, in July of last year, the city reflected suggestions from the Yongin Youth Policy Network Proposal Contest to expand the range of supported software, and requested a change to the social security system from the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The consultation was completed in January of this year. As a result, starting this month, the city will subsidize part of the ChatGPT Plus subscription fee, which is 29,000 won per month.

The program is available to residents of Yongin aged 18 to 39. Each individual can receive up to 50,000 won per year, and the subsidy can be used up to three times in a lifetime for software purchases.

The subsidy will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis to a total of 600 people, with 300 recipients in each half of the year. After review and selection, the subsidy will be deposited in a lump sum into the recipient’s personal bank account around the 10th of the month following application.

Youth wishing to apply must purchase the software during the program period and submit an online application through the "Yongin Youth Portal Youth e-Rang." Required documents include a copy of the resident registration, a purchase receipt, and a screenshot of the account registration page on the manufacturer’s website.

Lee Sangil, Mayor of Yongin, stated, "This expanded support will serve as an opportunity for young people to develop skills directly related to their work and studies."

The city launched the Youth Software Purchase Subsidy Program in 2022, becoming the first local government in the country to do so, following a proposal from the Youth Network. In 2024, 29.98 million won was provided to 697 recipients, and last year, 29.92 million won was provided to 707 recipients.
