Claims Must Be Filed Within Three Years of the Incident
Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province, announced on February 2 that it has enrolled in a "Citizen Safety Insurance" program to support the livelihood stability of citizens affected by various disasters and accidents.
The "Citizen Safety Insurance" is a policy that covers all citizens whose address is registered in Yongin under the Resident Registration Act, without any separate enrollment procedures or cost burden. Registered foreign residents and overseas Koreans with domestic residence permits are also included as beneficiaries.
The insurance is renewed annually, and this year's coverage period runs from this month until January next year.
A total of 14 types of coverage are provided. For disasters and calamities, the coverage includes: ▲ Death due to natural disasters ▲ Disability due to natural disasters ▲ Death due to social disasters ▲ Disability due to social disasters.
For injuries, the coverage includes: ▲ Death due to injury ▲ Disability due to injury ▲ Death due to injury from explosion, fire, collapse, or landslide ▲ Disability due to injury from explosion, fire, collapse, or landslide ▲ Death due to injury while using public transportation ▲ Disability due to injury while using public transportation ▲ Lump-sum injury diagnosis payment.
Other coverage includes: ▲ Compensation for injuries from sexual crimes ▲ Medical expenses for injuries from school zone traffic accidents ▲ Medical expenses for injuries from Silver Zone traffic accidents.
Yongin citizens can claim insurance benefits for accidents that occur anywhere in Korea during the coverage period, as long as the claim is made within three years from the date of the accident. Claims can be made by the victim or a representative without any separate enrollment procedure, simply by contacting the Citizen Safety Insurance Integrated Call Center (1522-3556).
Compensation can be received in addition to disaster relief funds or personal insurance, and overlapping compensation is also allowed within the coverage items. Detailed information can be found on the "Citizen Safety Insurance" page of the Yongin City website.
Meanwhile, through the Yongin City Citizen Safety Insurance, 673 people received a total of 356.57 million won in insurance payouts in 2024, while 441 people received 238.48 million won last year.
Lee Sangil, Mayor of Yongin, said, "I hope the Citizen Safety Insurance will provide practical help to citizens facing difficulties due to unexpected accidents or disasters," adding, "We will continue to build a comprehensive disaster response system to create a city environment where everyone can live with peace of mind."
