ECV Certification Obtained from UL Solutions
Recycled Glass Fiber Applied to Outer Washer Tub
Samsung Electronics announced on February 1 that it has received ECV (Environmental Claims Validations) certification from the global certification body UL Solutions for applying composite fiber materials made from recycled waste glass to its all-in-one 'Bespoke AI Combo' washer-dryer.
The ECV certification is a system that verifies the validity of a company's environmental claims-such as the usage rate of reusable or recyclable materials and the content of hazardous substances-and grants an environmental mark if proven. The certification process is known for its rigor, involving assessments of the recycled material content in the manufacturing process and thorough engineering reviews.
Samsung Electronics, in collaboration with Samsung Display, grinds waste glass generated during the product manufacturing process, removes impurities, and melts it to create recycled glass fiber of the same quality as conventional glass fiber used in products. This recycled glass fiber is applied to the outer tub of the washing machine. The outer tub, a key component that surrounds the inner drum of the washer, is made from a composite material containing glass fiber.
Samsung Electronics obtained certification from UL Solutions for a 10% recycled material content in the outer tub. Recently, the company replaced part of the glass fiber in the outer tub of 'Bespoke AI Combo' units produced domestically with recycled materials.
Samsung Electronics plans to expand the use of recycled glass fiber to drum washers manufactured in North America, Vietnam, and other regions within this year.
Meanwhile, in an effort to reduce environmental impact, Samsung Electronics has been applying recycled materials to various home appliances, including jointly developing enamel steel sheets with POSCO in September 2024 for use in microwave ovens and ovens.
Moon Jongseung, Executive Vice President of the Digital Appliances (DA) Division at Samsung Electronics, stated, "Samsung Electronics has been continuously expanding the use of recycled materials in refrigerators, washing machines, ovens, and more to reduce environmental impact," adding, "We will continue to broaden partnerships with external companies to develop a wider range of recycled materials in the future."
