Rodent and Bird Droppings Found in US Warehouse
Thousands of Food and Pharmaceutical Products Voluntarily Recalled
Goldstar Distribution, a US distributor, has voluntarily recalled thousands of products that were stored and distributed from a warehouse where rodent and bird droppings were discovered.
According to Newsweek on January 29 (local time), Goldstar Distribution initiated the recall of thousands of products-including food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and pet food-after unsanitary conditions were identified at its facility in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Previously, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that rodent and bird droppings, as well as urine, were found at the facility. The FDA stated that airborne particles originating from animal excrement may have contaminated the products. The agency explained that such exposure could increase the risk of illnesses such as salmonellosis caused by Salmonella bacteria or leptospirosis, and that these risks are especially significant for vulnerable populations.
The recalled products were supplied to more than 50 distribution points across three states: Indiana, Minnesota, and North Dakota.
This recall was first announced last month. On January 22, the FDA elevated the recall to Class II. A Class II recall is issued when exposure to the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects, but the likelihood of serious health consequences is low.
The FDA released a detailed list of locations where the recalled products were sold on its website. The list includes a variety of items such as over-the-counter medicines like liquid DayQuil and Tylenol, cereals like Cheerios and Frosted, Pringles, Kraft Mac & Cheese, Nutella, Heinz ketchup and vinegar, and other food products. Some pet foods from well-known brands such as Purina, Friskies, and Fancy Feast were also included in the recall.
The FDA advised consumers to immediately dispose of the affected products. Those seeking a refund were instructed to contact Goldstar Distribution to proceed with the process.
However, the FDA clarified that this recall does not apply to products delivered directly from manufacturers to retail or convenience stores, nor to frozen or refrigerated products.
