Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province will work to create a barrier-free tourism environment this year, in celebration of the "Visit Suwon Year."
In December of last year, Suwon City was selected for the "Barrier-Free Tourism Environment Creation Project," organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The city has since established key routes for barrier-free tourism and specified its policy direction.
Based on recent consultations with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Korea Tourism Organization, and the Tourism Society, Suwon City plans to organically connect three core routes-Enjoyment, Healing, and Experience-ensuring seamless movement for tourists and maximizing routes that lead to local consumption.
The "Universal Enjoyment Route" goes beyond simply providing obstacle-free paths. It incorporates unique transportation options such as the Suwon Royal Parade and Hwaseong Trolley, creating an experience-based barrier-free tourism model that allows people with mobility challenges to conveniently enjoy sightseeing.
The "Universal Healing Route" will be developed as a pedestrian-friendly tourism path centered around Paldalsan Mountain and the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, enabling visitors to enjoy both natural and historical resources.
The "Universal Experience Route" will connect cultural facilities such as art museums, museums, and performance halls, as well as the Haenggung-dong commercial district, with Hwaseong Haenggung Square as a hub. This everyday life-oriented tourism route is designed so that tourist movement naturally leads to local spending.
A Suwon City official stated, "We are comprehensively improving our tourism structure this year, taking the opportunity of the Visit Suwon Year," adding, "We aim to establish a virtuous cycle model where barrier-free tourism not only removes obstacles, but also leads to revitalization of the local economy."
