Expectations for Expanded Cooperation in Defense, Energy, and Investment
Efforts Underway for Emir Tamim's Visit to Korea
On January 28, President Lee Jaemyung met with the special envoy of the Emir of Qatar and expressed his commitment to further strengthening strategic cooperation between the two countries.
That morning at the Blue House, President Lee met with Mohammed Al-Khulaifi, the Qatari special envoy, and conveyed an invitation for Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to visit Korea. He said, "Please convey to Emir Tamim my hope to have a candid discussion in Seoul on ways to develop bilateral relations."
President Lee assessed the dispatch of this special envoy as "demonstrating the firm will for cooperation between the two countries," and stated, "I look forward to further enhancing mutually beneficial cooperation in strategic areas such as defense and defense industry, investment, and energy."
He further emphasized, "Now that our bilateral relationship of over 50 years has been elevated to a 'comprehensive strategic partnership,' I hope that, even amid a complex international situation, we will contribute together to regional and global peace as true friends who support each other."
Special Envoy Al-Khulaifi responded, "I have come to personally deliver Emir Tamim's special trust and commitment to strengthening cooperation," and added, "I will work to realize the shared will of both leaders to advance our bilateral relations."
President Lee had also spoken with Emir Tamim by phone on January 20 and discussed the intention to hold a face-to-face summit at the earliest possible date.
