Suspect in Voice Phishing Case Escapes During Search and Seizure
Over 100 Officers, Including Criminal Investigation Unit, Deployed
A man in his 40s, who was arrested in Daegu on suspicion of participating in a phone-based financial fraud (voice phishing) scheme, escaped while handcuffed, prompting a large-scale police manhunt.
According to the Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency on January 28, at around 12:50 p.m. that day, a man identified as A, in his 40s, who had been apprehended in a villa in Daemyeong-dong, Nam-gu, Daegu, on suspicion of involvement in voice phishing, managed to flee the scene during a lapse in surveillance amid a search and seizure operation. It was confirmed that A was still handcuffed at the time of his escape.
Immediately after A's escape, the police deployed more than 100 personnel, including all members of the Criminal Investigation Unit, investigators from local police stations, and the Mobile Patrol Unit, to track him down. They are focusing on analyzing nearby closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage to determine his escape route and movements.
A police official stated, "We are currently mobilizing all available investigative resources to apprehend the fugitive," adding, "It is difficult to disclose specific details of the investigation at this time."
The police believe that A is unlikely to have traveled far and are expanding the search area around his residence and other key possible routes of movement.
