On January 27 (local time), U.S. media reported that a person was left in critical condition after being shot by a federal immigration enforcement officer in the border area of Arizona. This incident occurred just three days after a man in his 30s was fatally shot by a federal officer in Minnesota.
According to NBC and local broadcaster KVOA, at around 7:30 a.m. that day, a person was shot and left in critical condition in Pima County, a southern border region of Arizona. A spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff's Office stated that the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) was involved in the shooting.
Details such as the identity of the injured person and the circumstances of the incident have not yet been confirmed. The injured individual received emergency care at the scene and was then airlifted to a nearby hospital. KVOA reported that Border Patrol agents were present at the scene. The Pima County Sheriff's Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are investigating the incident.
This shooting occurred just three days after a Border Patrol agent fatally shot Alex Pretty, a man in his 30s, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on January 24, and about three weeks after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot Renee Good, a woman in her 30s, on January 7. The deaths of Pretty and Good sparked intense protests across the United States and led to strong criticism of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Donald Trump administration's immigration enforcement policies.
The Washington Post reported on the same day that, since July of last year, there have been a total of 16 shooting incidents involving federal officers under the Department of Homeland Security during arrest operations or when firing at protesters opposing them. According to the report, at least 10 people, including four U.S. citizens, were shot, and three of them died. It was found that no officers from ICE or the Border Patrol involved in these incidents have been criminally charged or disciplined.
Former U.S. President Joe Biden also publicly criticized the Trump administration's immigration enforcement and protest crackdowns on this day. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, "What has happened in Minneapolis over the past month betrays our most basic values as Americans," and emphasized, "We are not a country that executes our citizens in the street. We are not a country that brutalizes our citizens for exercising their constitutional rights."
