325 Cases of Frozen Water Meters in Seoul... Damage Spreads Amid Cold Wave

In Seoul, the number of frozen water meter incidents has continued to rise, surpassing a cumulative total of 300 cases.


According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government on January 23, a total of 115 cases of frozen water meters and 2 cases of frozen water pipes were reported between 5:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on the same day. There were no cases of cold-related illnesses.


Since the cold wave advisory was issued on January 19, the cumulative number of frozen water meter incidents has reached 325, averaging 81 cases per day.


The Seoul Metropolitan Government is operating a comprehensive cold wave response center with 59 emergency teams consisting of 230 personnel and 70 patrol staff. Care activities have been carried out for 14,751 vulnerable individuals, including street homeless people, elderly people living alone, and residents of single-room dwellings, such as welfare checks and support services.


A total of 6,581 cold wave mitigation facilities, cold wave shelters, climate companion shelters, and cold wave emergency shelters are currently in operation.


The cold wave advisory that had been in effect across Seoul was lifted at 10:00 a.m. in the southeastern and southwestern regions on this day, but remains in place in 14 districts in the northeastern and northwestern regions.
