After Cutting 14,000 Jobs Recently... Amazon Plans Further Layoffs

Largest Layoffs in Company History Planned

Global e-commerce giant Amazon is reportedly planning to lay off thousands of additional corporate employees as early as next week.

On January 22 (local time), major international media outlets such as Business Insider and Bloomberg News, citing multiple sources, reported that Amazon is undertaking large-scale workforce reductions as part of organizational streamlining efforts.

This round of layoffs comes just months after Amazon announced the elimination of 14,000 positions last year. At that time, the company stated, "Workforce reductions may continue in 2026 as we continue to identify additional areas to flatten our organizational structure."

Andy Jassy, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Amazon, foreshadowed restructuring in an email sent to employees in June of last year, saying, "Generative artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-powered software agents will fundamentally change the way we work," and added, "Some roles currently being performed will require fewer people."

Since launching large-scale restructuring in 2022, Amazon has seen about 27,000 employees leave the company. With the latest round of layoffs, the total number of job cuts is expected to exceed 41,000.

According to these media outlets, Amazon employs approximately 1.58 million people, with the majority working in logistics centers and warehouses. The upcoming layoffs target the corporate headquarters workforce, which numbers around 350,000. Amazon has not issued a clear statement regarding these reports.

Previously, Beth Galetti, Senior Vice President at Amazon, commented on the background of the layoffs in October, stating, "This generation of AI is the most innovative technology we have seen since the internet revolution." She added, "AI is enabling companies to innovate faster than ever before."
