Core Strategy of the Glocal Consortium University
Announcing a Virtuous Cycle of University-Industry Cooperation and a Future Vision
Dong-A University and Dongseo University have officially launched "Integrated Industrial Complex 2.0," based on a glocal consortium university system, presenting a new profit-driven innovation model for collaboration among local government, industry, and academia. This strategy is drawing attention as it aims for both sustainable revenue generation by university-industry cooperation foundations and regional innovation.
Dong-A University (President Lee Haewoo) held the "Glocal University 30 Integrated Industrial Complex 2.0 Launch Ceremony - Sharing Achievements of Local Government-Industry-Academia Cooperation and Announcing the Future Vision" on January 21 at the Grand Ballroom of Signiel Hotel in Haeundae, Busan.
The event was attended by Lee Haewoo, President of Dong-A University; Jang Jeguk, President of Dongseo University; Kim Gwiok, Director of the Youth Industry-Academia Bureau of Busan Metropolitan City; Kim Hyunggyun, President of Busan Technopark; Kim Youngjae, President of Busan Research Institute; Kim Youngbu, President of Busan Institute of Science and Technology Promotion (BISTEP); and over 200 other representatives from universities, local governments, related organizations, and companies.
"Integrated Industrial Complex 2.0" is the flagship brand of the Dong-A-Dongseo glocal consortium university, established to realize economies of scale through the alliance of local private universities and to spread a sustainable, profit-driven integrated industrial complex operation model. Its goal is to overcome the limitations of single-university-led industrial complexes by enhancing efficiency and expertise through joint projects and global expansion.
Kim Sungjae, Head of Integrated Industrial Complex SO (Vice President and Head of University-Industry Cooperation at Dong-A University), stated, "We named it 'Integrated Industrial Complex 2.0' to signify that the complex is now entering a stage where it fundamentally transforms the existing paradigm and begins full-scale operation," adding, "We hope it will develop into a practical cooperation model where universities, industry, and the local community grow together."
Integrated Industrial Complex 2.0 aims to achieve 200 billion won in university-industry cooperation revenue, presenting and validating innovative profit models such as 'franchising' to spread proven cooperation models, 'market boosting' to accelerate technology market entry, and 'snowballing' through reinvestment of achievements.
The event was divided into two parts: Part 1, "Vision Declaration," and Part 2, "Sharing Achievements." In Part 1, there was a demonstration of the "AI-based Integrated Technology Platform" connecting companies and researchers, and the launch of "Integrated Industrial Complex 2.0, DU² TechBridge" was announced. The name and logo for DU² TechBridge were selected through a contest involving members of both Dong-A and Dongseo Universities.
A fundraising pledge ceremony was also held. Material Science pledged to donate display equipment worth 1 billion won to Dong-A University; Panstar Group pledged to donate research robots and an integrated control system worth 500 million won; and COVAT pledged to donate secondary battery pack production equipment worth 500 million won to Dongseo University.
Additionally, through the designation ceremony for the "Technology Value Creation Branch," which serves as the execution network of the integrated industrial complex, a total of 25 branches were introduced in areas such as R&D, commercialization, services, startups, and academia.
Another feature of Integrated Industrial Complex 2.0 is its participatory structure, where students take a leading role in the four-party cooperation model of local government, industry, academia, and students. To this end, both universities are selecting student supporters and deploying them to the front lines of university-industry cooperation and technology commercialization. On the same day, the "Integrated Industrial Complex 2.0 Supporters Inauguration Ceremony," consisting of 30 students from Dong-A and Dongseo Universities, was also held.
In the second part, "Sharing Achievements," specific outcomes achieved by Integrated Industrial Complex 2.0 were presented, including the Global Advanced Technology Center (GATC) project, new business models for consortium universities, technology commercialization spin-off cases, and strategies for joint research with Europe (HORIZON EUROPE).
President Lee Haewoo stated, "The integrated industrial complex is both the core and starting point of the entire business plan for the glocal consortium university," adding, "I hope this becomes an opportunity to share the conviction that universities can serve as the foundation for regional growth, companies can become partners in innovation, and students and researchers can design their futures in the local community."
