The police are conducting a fourth round of questioning with Nam, the former chief secretary of independent lawmaker Kang Sunwoo, who is suspected of receiving a 100 million won nomination fund.

Police Summon Former Chief Secretary of Kang Sunwoo Again Amid Conflicting Testimonies Yonhap News Agency

The Public Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency summoned Nam as a suspect at 9 a.m. on January 23 for questioning. Upon arriving at the police station, Nam did not respond to reporters’ questions such as “Did you accompany them to the hotel cafe?” and “Did you not know you were moving a shopping bag full of money?” and proceeded directly to the investigation room. Nam is suspected of being involved in the process in which Seoul Metropolitan Council member Kim Kyung provided a 100 million won nomination fund to Assemblywoman Kang ahead of the local elections in June 2022.

Earlier, on January 20, Assemblywoman Kang appeared before the police for the first time and underwent a 21-hour overnight interrogation. Kang reportedly stated that in January 2022, she received a shopping bag from Council member Kim Kyung at a hotel cafe in Yongsan, but claimed she did not know it contained money. She further explained that around April of that year, when she considered giving the local election nomination to someone else and Council member Kim protested, she discovered that the shopping bag kept at her home actually contained cash.

Initially, Nam testified that he was unaware of any money exchanged between Council member Kim and Assemblywoman Kang. However, it has recently been reported that he reversed his previous statement and testified, “Assemblywoman Kang received 100 million won and used it as a deposit for a rental home.”

The police plan to re-examine the entire process with Nam, who was present at the hotel meeting, from the delivery of the shopping bag to the return of the money, in order to identify any discrepancies with Assemblywoman Kang’s testimony.

Afterward, the police will consider applying for arrest warrants for Kang and other individuals involved in the case.
