Charging electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and cameras with auxiliary batteries will be prohibited on both domestic and international flights operated by Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Jin Air, Air Busan, and Air Seoul.
Passengers must comply with the restrictions on the capacity and quantity of auxiliary batteries specified in the carry-on regulations. Before boarding, it is mandatory to take measures to prevent short circuits, such as attaching insulating tape to the battery terminals or storing each auxiliary battery in a plastic bag or individual pouch. Passengers may only carry auxiliary batteries on board without using them.
Even when auxiliary batteries are brought on board, passengers must keep them within reach, such as carrying them personally or storing them in the seat pocket or under the seat in front. Storing auxiliary batteries in the overhead bin is also prohibited, as delayed response to any abnormal signs could lead to serious accidents.
The five airlines plan to inform customers about these regulations through their websites, mobile apps, airport check-in counter notices, and notification messages. Continuous announcements will be made at the boarding gate and on board to minimize confusion.
Recently, as a series of onboard fire incidents caused by lithium-ion batteries in auxiliary batteries have occurred, there has been a growing call in the domestic and international aviation industry to strengthen regulations on carrying auxiliary batteries on aircraft for flight safety.
A Korean Air official stated, "The complete ban on the use of auxiliary batteries on board is an unavoidable measure for safe flight operations, and the cooperation of passengers is essential," adding, "All airlines under Hanjin Group will do their utmost to ensure customers have a safe and comfortable journey."
