Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has stated that Denmark is open to negotiations on all matters concerning Greenland, except for sovereignty.

Denmark Says "All Matters Except Greenland Sovereignty Open to Negotiation"

On January 22 (local time), Prime Minister Frederiksen said in a statement, "We can negotiate politically on everything-security, investment, the economy-but our sovereignty is non-negotiable."

She added, "The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which established the framework for the Greenland negotiations, is fully aware of Denmark's position," and confirmed that "during the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte the previous day, there was no discussion regarding sovereignty."

Prime Minister Frederiksen stated, "On the premise of respecting territorial integrity, we will continue constructive dialogue with our allies on how to strengthen security in the Arctic region, including the U.S. next-generation airborne missile defense system, Golden Dome." President Trump said in a CNBC interview the previous day, "Golden Dome and mineral rights will be part of the agreement concerning Greenland."

Meanwhile, there are expectations that the negotiations will also include revisions to the Greenland Defense Agreement signed between the United States and Denmark in 1951. Under this agreement, which was established shortly after World War II to counter the Soviet Union, the United States still operates an Air Force space base in northern Greenland.
