Suncheon Holds Aerospace Industry Policy Committee... Five-Year Basic Plan on Track

This policy committee meeting brought together top domestic experts in the aerospace sector, including the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, KAIST, and Hanwha Aerospace. The participants reaffirmed the goal of establishing Suncheon as a hub for the space economy by 2030, in line with the 'Five-Year Basic Plan for Fostering the Suncheon Aerospace Industry.' The meeting also included a review of achievements for 2025 and deliberation on plans for 2026.

This year, the city has led cooperation within the southern coastal space industry belt by establishing a governance system among local industry, academia, and research institutes in the aerospace sector, and by building partnerships with major domestic research institutes and universities. Suncheon has also formed a consultative body with South Jeolla Province and Goheung County to attract a defense industry cluster by 2026. In addition, Suncheon's own developed satellite, Suncheon SAT, was finally selected as a secondary payload for the Nuri rocket No. 6, making Suncheon the second local government after Daejeon to launch a satellite on the Nuri rocket and establishing itself as a space city.

For this year's main initiatives, Suncheon City plans to expand its industrial scope from launch vehicles to defense and satellites based on its launch achievements. The city has set forth the following goals: full-scale efforts to attract a defense industry cluster, expansion of the satellite development industry, strengthening the foundation for companies to enter the space defense sector, and reinforcing the aerospace city alliance through strategic partnerships.

A city official stated, "Based on the discussions of the policy committee and the existing foundation for fostering the aerospace industry, we will make thorough preparations to establish the Suncheon-style space industry ecosystem in 2026."
